The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kaduna State, Mr. Edward Marshall, has emphasized that opposition parties stand a real chance of defeating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections — but only if they come together under a unified PDP-led coalition.
Marshall made this remark on Wednesday while addressing members of the Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim political movement, popularly known as the GOH-Front, who visited the PDP Secretariat in Kaduna. The delegation was there to formally express their disagreement with the PDP National Executive Committee’s (NEC) decision to zone the 2027 presidential ticket to the South.
After receiving the group’s petition, Marshall told reporters that while the PDP is open to alliances, it remains the only political party in Nigeria with the nationwide reach and structural presence necessary to challenge the APC.
“We welcome coalitions, but the truth is that no other party has the grassroots structures we do. PDP remains the only truly national party capable of leading a successful opposition,” he stated.
He also criticized the APC’s leadership, pointing to economic hardship, inflation, and growing poverty as evidence of its failure. Marshall argued that Nigerians have become disillusioned with the ruling party and are hungry for meaningful change.
“People are struggling. Basic meals are now a luxury. The cost of living is unbearable. Nigerians have had enough,” he said.
Looking ahead to the PDP’s upcoming national convention scheduled for November 15 and 16, Marshall expressed confidence that it would revitalize the party. He predicted the return of key former members and possible defections from other parties once new, credible leadership is elected.
On the zoning issue, Marshall reiterated that while the NEC had resolved to retain the national chairmanship in the North and zone the presidency to the South, the decision doesn’t prevent any qualified individual from running.
“That decision stands. But it doesn’t stop anyone from contesting. The race is still open to those with the will and capacity,” he explained.
In response, the GOH-Front’s Kaduna State Coordinator, Aliyu Mohammed, urged the PDP leadership to reconsider the zoning stance, stressing that an open presidential contest would foster inclusivity and strengthen the party.
“We want an open playing field where the best candidate can emerge. That’s what will make PDP stronger and more competitive,” Mohammed said.
