The Abia State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has suspended Senator Adolphus Wabara, the chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees (BOT), over allegations of engaging in anti-party activities. The decision was made public through an official statement signed by Elder Abraham Amah, the PDP chairman in Abia, on behalf of the State Working Committee (SWC) and the State Executive Committee (SEC).
According to the statement, Wabara’s suspension was necessitated by his unilateral endorsement of Abia State Governor, Alex Chioma Otti of the Labour Party, for a second term—an endorsement made barely five months into Otti’s first tenure. The party viewed this act as sabotage, arguing that it brought the PDP into disrepute and violated key provisions of its constitution, specifically Chapter 10, Article 58(c) and (f). As a result, the SEC invoked disciplinary measures outlined in Article 59(1) of the PDP Constitution (2017 as amended).
The party explained that Wabara’s actions not only undermined its credibility but also demoralized its members and strengthened opposition forces. Despite multiple calls for him to clarify or refute his statement, he reportedly refused to do so, leading to the SEC’s decision to enforce disciplinary measures.
The SEC also cited a recent Federal High Court ruling in Ebonyi State, which had nullified certain constitutional provisions that previously granted Wabara immunity from disciplinary actions at the state level. The ruling reinforced the SEC’s authority to take action against him.
In addition to the one-year suspension, Wabara has been barred from holding any party office and removed from his position as BOT chairman. The party further announced that a seven-member disciplinary committee would be formed immediately to investigate the matter in greater detail.
The PDP emphasized its commitment to maintaining discipline among its members, regardless of their status, and reaffirmed its determination to uphold party values. The decision to suspend Wabara underscores the party’s zero-tolerance approach to actions that could jeopardize its integrity and electoral prospects.
