Peter Obi Challenges Tinubu to Account for ₦15.8trn Subsidy Savings, Over $100bn Borrowings

The NDC presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has challenged President Bola Tinubu to account for the estimated ₦15.8 trillion saved from the removal of petrol subsidy, more than $100 billion in borrowings and increased government revenue under his administration.

Obi made the demand in an open letter titled “Good Day, Mr President: Nigerians Deserve Accountability,” following Tinubu’s recent visit to Akwa Ibom State.

In the statement, the former Anambra State governor urged the President to extend his visits to other parts of the country, engage directly with citizens and explain how the resources available to his administration had translated into measurable improvements in their living conditions.

He questioned how the government had utilised the ₦15.8 trillion reportedly saved from subsidy removal, the more than $100 billion he said had been borrowed, as well as increased revenue from taxation and other government sources.

Obi said Nigerians deserved to know the number of people lifted out of poverty, out-of-school children returned to classrooms and functional primary healthcare centres established since Tinubu assumed office.

He also demanded an explanation of improvements in electricity supply, recalling the President’s reported pledge that Nigerians should not vote for him if he failed to fix the country’s power sector.

On security, Obi questioned the administration’s performance in tackling terrorism and insecurity, insisting that citizens deserved clear evidence of progress.

“Nigerians deserve answers. They deserve to know what has been done with the resources entrusted to your government,” he stated.

The former presidential candidate further argued that accountability, transparency and the measurable impact of public spending on citizens’ lives must form the foundation of the country’s development.

He maintained that government revenue and borrowed funds should translate into tangible improvements in education, healthcare, electricity, security and poverty reduction.

Obi concluded the statement by reiterating his call for a new Nigeria founded on accountability, transparency and responsible management of public resources.

  • “A new Nigeria is POssible,” he declared.
