Peter Obi, former Governor of Anambra State and presidential aspirant, has emphasized the importance of a recent political shift that saw a coalition of prominent Nigerian politicians adopt the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as their platform for the 2027 general elections. According to Obi, while the decision was far from easy, it was deemed essential for addressing the nation’s mounting challenges and fostering a new era of transformative leadership.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Obi explained that the decision followed a period of serious reflection on the state of the country. He noted that Nigeria is currently at a critical juncture, and the need for a capable and visionary leadership has never been more urgent. The coalition’s choice of the ADC represents a collective step toward national renewal. Leading this effort are Senator David Mark, who assumes the role of National Chairman, and former Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, who serves as National Secretary.
The coalition comprises influential figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai. These leaders came together in Abuja on Tuesday to publicly endorse the ADC, aligning their political ambitions toward a common goal — securing competent and compassionate governance for the Nigerian people.
Obi reaffirmed his dedication to this collaborative effort and reiterated his intention to serve only one term if elected. He acknowledged that true progress cannot be achieved by isolated efforts, but rather through inclusive partnerships that transcend political and ethnic divides. He concluded by emphasizing that, to overcome entrenched poverty and insecurity, Nigeria must build connections and foster unity — even when such collaboration proves to be challenging. This, he believes, is the only path toward genuine national transformation.
