Former Anambra State governor and ex–Labour Party presidential flag bearer, Peter Obi, has publicly affirmed that he will once again seek Nigeria’s highest political office in the 2027 general election. Obi made this known on Sunday night during an interactive discussion on X Spaces, where he engaged directly with his supporters and used the opportunity to clearly state his political intentions going forward.
While addressing participants during the online session, Obi categorically dismissed speculations that he might consider accepting a vice-presidential slot on any political ticket. He stressed that his long-standing preparation, exposure to leadership, and deep engagement with governance were geared solely toward becoming president, not serving as a deputy. According to him, his continuous efforts to study governance models across the world were not meant to position him for a secondary role in government.
Obi expressed strong confidence in his capacity to lead Nigeria, insisting that his background in business and public service places him in a better position than many contenders. He maintained that he possesses the experience and competence required to reposition the country, noting that he successfully built his business ventures from the ground up and has accumulated practical knowledge that can be applied to national development. Emphasising his resolve, Obi assured supporters that his name would appear on the ballot in 2027 and appealed for their continued backing and prayers.
The former governor recalled his participation in the 2023 presidential election, where he emerged as the Labour Party candidate and posed a serious challenge to the dominance of the two major political parties. His campaign attracted massive support, particularly among young Nigerians and voters in major urban areas. Although Obi and his party disputed the outcome of the election over alleged irregularities, both the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal and the Supreme Court ultimately upheld the victory of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Obi’s political journey includes serving two terms as governor of Anambra State between 2006 and 2014, despite an initial impeachment that was later overturned. He also previously contested as the vice-presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in 2019. Since then, he has remained a prominent voice in national politics as he prepares for another presidential bid in 2027.
