ABUJA, NIGERIA— Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress for the upcoming 2027 general elections, has expressed severe concerns regarding his personal safety, suggesting that he might not survive to contest the polls due to deliberate government hostility targeting him and other opposition figures.
Speaking during a widely shared interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo on Wednesday, the former Anambra State governor stated that the current administration is intentionally obstructing every aspect of his livelihood, adding that if given the opportunity, those in power might ensure he does not remain alive.
While clarifying that he was not leveling an explicit, direct accusation, Obi emphasized that his everyday experiences reflect continuous sabotage and unprovoked frustration, with the government’s influence visible in virtually all his daily affairs.
The politician further asserted that these personal attacks are part of a broader, systemic campaign directed at the entire political opposition. He claimed that he is routinely denied basic privileges he is naturally entitled to, recounting a recent incident at an airport where officials targeted and locked his vehicle while ignoring other cars parked in the same vicinity.
According to Obi, the hostile political climate has created an atmosphere of fear to the extent that associates now avoid greeting him in public places out of fear of retribution.
He also revealed that some supporters have gone as far as requesting that he abstain from attending their private family milestones, such as weddings, to avoid becoming targets of the state. While Obi did not present concrete evidence to substantiate these claims during the interview, the Federal Government has yet to issue an official response to his allegations.
