….. Legacy of Light, Reflecting on the Life and Teachings of Pope Francis
In a heartfelt Facebook post, Mr. Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate, shared his reflections following the passing of Pope Francis on April 21. Obi joined thousands of mourners, alongside global dignitaries and Cardinal Francis Arinze, at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome to pay his final respects to the late Pontiff. The solemn lying-in-state was not only a moment of mourning but also one of deep reflection on the extraordinary life and legacy of a spiritual leader who touched the world.
According to Obi, Pope Francis was far more than the head of the Catholic Church—he was a beacon of hope and morality in a world struggling with injustice and indifference. His leadership, rooted in humility, compassion, and service to the poor, left a profound impact across religious and political divides. He consistently advocated for the voiceless, and his commitment to justice and human dignity defined his papacy.
Obi shared his personal connection to the Pope through his involvement in Scholars Occultantes, an international network of intellectuals and changemakers founded by Pope Francis during his time as Archbishop. The group, centered on truth, ethical leadership, and societal transformation, offered Obi a deeper understanding of the Pope’s spiritual and intellectual influence. Through this engagement, Obi came to admire the Pope not only as a religious figure but also as a profound thinker and moral guide.
He recalled three personal meetings with Pope Francis, each of which left a lasting impression. The Pope’s gentle demeanor, unwavering faith, and humble presence deeply resonated with Obi. He described Pope Francis as someone who embodied the essence of true leadership—one that uplifts others and leads with empathy and integrity.
