Peter Obi Responds to Threats Following New Year Message, Condemns Growing Repression in Nigeria

Reacting to comments made by Felix Morka during a television program on January 5, Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State, has addressed the threats he has faced following his New Year message. Morka, a spokesperson for the All Progressives Congress (APC), had stated, “Mr. Peter Obi has crossed the line so many times and he has what’s coming to him, and whatever he gets, he should manage it.” Obi, however, refuted the claim and invited anyone to demonstrate how he had crossed the line.

In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), Obi revealed that his New Year address had triggered threats to his life, his family, and those around him. He emphasized his commitment to speaking truthfully despite the hostility, expressing concern over what he sees as Nigeria’s growing shift toward undemocratic practices.

Obi said, “Have I truly crossed the line? I ask this question because my New Year message has now led to threats against my life and family. While I have received various messages, Felix Morka has gone further to accuse me of crossing the line and warned of consequences. If I have done so, I welcome anyone to point it out.”

He further condemned what he described as a repressive climate where freedom of expression is increasingly suppressed, warning against the nation’s drift toward authoritarianism. Obi concluded by praying for a freer and better society for future generations, reaffirming his resolve to speak against undemocratic practices.
