Philadelphia Community Rallies to Support Family of Slain 77-Year-Old Uber Driver Olatunji Bolaji

The Philadelphia Chapter of the Black Students Union (BSU) has initiated a fundraising campaign to support the family of Olatunji Bolaji, a 77-year-old Nigerian-born Uber driver who was tragically shot and killed in Center City, Philadelphia. The organization has set a goal of raising $25,000 to help cover his funeral expenses and provide financial assistance to his grieving family.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, April 16, 2025, when Bolaji arrived at Byblos Hookah Bar to pick up a passenger. As the 22-year-old passenger entered the vehicle, two assailants stepped out of a car parked behind Bolaji’s and opened fire. According to Philadelphia Chief Inspector Scott Small, Bolaji was struck in the head, while his passenger sustained injuries to the arm, leg, and stomach. Despite his critical wounds, Bolaji managed to drive a short distance before crashing. He was later pronounced dead.

Bolaji, a resident of Norristown, Pennsylvania, was remembered as a hardworking husband, father, grandfather, and dedicated rideshare driver. In response to the heartbreaking event, BSU President Alex Morris organized a GoFundMe campaign to support Bolaji’s widow, Charice, and their children through this devastating time.

The fundraising effort outlines specific financial needs: $12,000 will go toward funeral and memorial arrangements, $5,000 is earmarked for the family’s urgent living expenses, and $3,000 will be used for counseling services to help the family cope with their loss.

In a heartfelt message, Morris urged the public to contribute whatever they could—whether $5 or $500—and to spread awareness of the campaign. He emphasized Bolaji’s role in the community, stating that he had helped many people get home safely, and now the community has an opportunity to return that kindness by standing by his family in their darkest hour.
