Police Foil Kidnap Attempt on Ondo Community Leader After Gun Battle

Operatives of the Ondo State Police Command have foiled an attempted abduction of the Chairman of Ojana New Area, Pastor Taiwo Taiwo, following a gun battle with suspected kidnappers in Owo, Owo Local Government Area of the state.

The incident occurred on Sunday evening when a six-man armed gang reportedly stormed the cleric’s residence with the intention of abducting him.

Confirming the development in a statement issued on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, said officers responded swiftly after receiving a distress call regarding the attack.

According to the police spokesperson, the command received information about the criminal operation at approximately 7:05 p.m., prompting the Divisional Police Officer of B Division, Owo, to immediately mobilise a patrol team to the scene.

Jimoh explained that upon arrival, the officers engaged the armed suspects in a fierce exchange of gunfire.

“The operatives encountered the armed assailants, leading to an exchange of gunfire. The superior tactical response and determination of the police operatives forced the criminals to retreat into the surrounding bush, abandoning their plan,” he stated.

The police said the prompt intervention of the officers prevented the abduction and ensured the safety of the intended victim and his family.

Pastor Taiwo and his family members were subsequently rescued unharmed and relocated to a secure location as a precautionary measure.

The command assured residents of its commitment to protecting lives and property across the state, while efforts are ongoing to track down and apprehend the fleeing suspects.

The incident is the latest in a series of security challenges confronting parts of the state, as law enforcement agencies continue operations aimed at curbing kidnapping and other violent crimes.
