The Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Alagbon, Ikoyi, Lagos, has begun an official investigation into allegations of misconduct involving one of its officers, following serious accusations from a Lagos-based couple, Mr. and Mrs. Chidi Mitchell Onyiah. The couple, through their lawyer, Savn Daniel of Otung, Okoh & Co. Chambers, had submitted a petition to the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, accusing the officer of extortion, intimidation, and abuse of power.
According to the petition, the matter began in July 2023 after the couple purchased a property at 2, Salami Street, Olodi-Apapa, Lagos, from a certain Mr. Sulaiman Ojora. They stated that the real estate transaction was properly conducted, with all necessary documents, including a deed of assignment, signed and video recorded to validate the sale. The property transfer, they emphasized, was legally executed and transparent in every respect.
The couple, however, alleged that problems started shortly after the purchase when a politician reportedly developed an interest in the same property. Despite the sale being facilitated by an accredited agent and witnessed by several parties, the couple began receiving threats challenging their ownership rights. Seeking justice, they reported the matter to the FCID Annex in Alagbon, where an officer was assigned to handle the case.
Instead of pursuing an impartial investigation, the couple alleged that the officer in question subjected them to continuous harassment and intimidation. They further claimed that the officer unlawfully detained another person who had issued them the conveyance letter for the property. Their lawyer added that the officer allegedly went as far as threatening to implicate the couple in a murder case concerning the death of one of the individuals involved in the land dispute, escalating their fear and distress.
When contacted for clarification, the FCID Annex spokesperson, Aminat Mayegun, confirmed that the allegations had indeed been lodged and that the officer had already responded to a related petition submitted earlier to the X-Squad. She explained that while the officer had provided a written statement regarding the accusations, the complainants reportedly did not appear for a follow-up session. Nevertheless, Mayegun assured that the police were committed to ensuring fairness and transparency in the investigation. She emphasized that if any evidence of misconduct or abuse of office was established against the officer, the Force would not hesitate to enforce appropriate disciplinary measures in line with police regulations.
