Protesters Seize Control of Major Abuja Road, Defy Security Operatives

A major road in Abuja, the Zuba-Kubwa expressway, has been taken over by protesters, causing disruptions to traffic and daily activities. Despite efforts by security operatives to disperse the crowd, the protesters have regrouped and maintained control of the road, only allowing vehicles with leaves to pass through. The expressway is a critical route that leads to the Presidential Villa from neighboring states.

The protesters have set up at least seven roadblocks within a two-kilometer distance, restricting both human and vehicular movement. Security forces have attempted to dislodge the groups, but the protesters have returned to the spots, causing a standoff. A convoy of a top government official was forced to park and assess the situation from a distance.

The protests have spilled over to other locations in the capital city, despite a Federal High Court order restricting protesters to Moshood Abiola Stadium. Soldiers from Zuma Barracks in Suleja, Niger State, have reopened the Abuja-Kaduna highway after protesters dominated the road for about five hours.

An Abuja resident, Abubakar Ibrahim, reported being trapped on the road for several hours due to the protests. He witnessed soldiers storming the scene and destroying the roadblock, forcing protesters to flee. Unfortunately, an elderly person who was being taken to the hospital got stranded and lost their life in the gridlock.

The situation remains tense, with reports of gunshots, bonfires, and curfews in other parts of the country. The protests have caused widespread disruptions, and the government is struggling to maintain control.
