Traders Protest Abia State Government’s Demolition Plan
Traders Protest Abia State Government’s Demolition Plan: Amidst Nationwide protest against hunger and hardships in the country, Traders and stakeholders
of Ekeoha Shopping Centre, a renowned garment market in Aba,
staged a peaceful protest at the Abia State House of Assembly premises
in Umuahia, appealing to the state government to reconsider its plan to demolish and remodel the shopping centre.
The traders expressed concerns that the proposed demolition would exacerbate
their economic hardships, particularly given the current economic climate.
While they acknowledged the need for remodelling, they feared losing their
shops and livelihoods in the process.
Leaders of the traders, Chief Chris Uruakpa and Prince Tochukwu Oguguo,
suggested an alternative solution: commencing construction on phase two
of the Osisioma area, which could accommodate all traders upon completion.
They pledged to relocate to the new site, highlighting their existing financial
struggles, including bank loans invested in their shops.
