Security Gaurd Accidentally Shoots Himself in foot at ESBS Newsroom
Security Gaurd Accidentally Shoots Himself in foot at ESBS Newsroom:A potentially disastrous event was narrowly avoided on Wednesday at the Enugu State Broadcasting Service (ESBS) newsroom when a private security guard accidentally shot himself in the foot.
The incident occurred while the guard was accompanying ESBS Managing Director, Ladi Akeredolu-Ali, on a routine visit. The guard was carrying a baby
belonging to one of the staff members when his firearm fell to the
ground and discharged. As the guard attempted to retrieve the weapon,
he inadvertently pulled the trigger, causing the gun to fire and hit his own foot.
The mishap took place during peak news production hours, posing
a serious risk to those present, including three news editors and the Managing Director. Fortunately, no one else, including the baby, was harmed. The incident underscored the importance of strict firearm safety and handling protocols, especially in sensitive environments like a newsroom.
the guard
A source revealed that the guard involved was one of over 10 hunters
hired by the Managing Director for personal security. It was noted
that these armed personnel are often used to intimidate staff, guests,
and visitors at the station. Describing the sequence of events,
the source mentioned that the Managing Director was supervising the 4 p.m. news production when the guard’s gun fell. After someone took the baby from the guard,
he attempted to fix the gun, which was pointed toward the Managing Director. The Managing Director immediately instructed the guard to turn the muzzle away, but moments later, the gun went off, severely injuring the guard’s foot.
The source also expressed concerns about the militarized environment
at ESBS since Akeredolu-Ali assumed office, highlighting how the Managing Director frequently surrounds himself with heavily armed hunters and security personnel.
Staff have reportedly faced harassment, and visitors to the station have often been treated harshly by security. Several internal security staff were also suspended indefinitely after being falsely accused of theft, and the source claimed that despite this, thefts continue to occur at the station.
Attempts to reach Akeredolu-Ali for comments on the incident were unsuccessful, as he did not respond to calls or text messages from reporters.
