Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria (SPDC) and the leadership of Soku Kingdom in Rivers State have both denied reports of an explosion at the Soku Gas Plant. In response to inquiries, Shell’s Head of Media Relations, Michael Adande, confirmed that no such incident had occurred, clarifying that SPDC’s assets, including the Soku Gas Plant, have been divested to Renaissance Africa Energy Company Limited. Shell’s Country Chair in Nigeria, Osagie Osunbor, also reiterated that the Soku Gas Plant was unaffected by any explosion, emphasizing that SPDC’s assets are now under the control of the new owner, Renaissance Africa Energy.
Osunbor further pointed out that while the Soku Gas Plant itself was unaffected, there are other facilities in the Soku Field, and if any incidents had occurred at these sites, the relevant operators should be contacted for information.
Similarly, the leadership of Soku Kingdom has condemned the false reports of an explosion. In a statement issued on Sunday, March 23, 2025, Witness Alasia, the General Secretary of the Community Development Committee (CDC) of Soku Kingdom, expressed disappointment at the spread of such misinformation. Alasia dismissed the reports as completely false and misleading, stressing that the Soku Gas Plant is in safe and operational condition. He urged the public to disregard these unfounded rumors and reassured that the plant remains in perfect working order.
