Vice President Kashim Shettima is participating in the events marking the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day (AFCRD) at the cenotaph of the Unknown Soldier in Eagle Square, Abuja.
Shettima is representing President Bola Tinubu, who is currently in the United Arab Emirates attending the 2026 Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week.
The AFCRD is an annual programme organised by the Ministry of Defence to pay tribute to fallen servicemen and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in the defence of the nation. Those honoured include personnel who lost their lives during the First and Second World Wars, the Nigerian Civil War, peacekeeping missions, and various internal security operations, particularly the ongoing battle against terrorism that poses a threat to Nigeria’s unity and stability.
In addition to honouring the dead, the ceremony recognises surviving veterans and provides an opportunity to mobilise financial and moral support for their welfare, as well as for the families of fallen officers and soldiers.
Although Armed Forces Remembrance is observed worldwide, Nigeria’s observance reflects its distinct historical journey. As a Commonwealth nation, Nigeria initially commemorated Remembrance Day on November 11, alongside other member countries, in honour of those who died in the World Wars. The date, symbolising the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, marks the end of the First World War in 1918.
Subsequently, January 15 was adopted as Nigeria’s Remembrance Day to mark the end of the Nigerian Civil War and better align the commemoration with the country’s national history.
The 2026 AFCRD is particularly significant, coming at a time when the Armed Forces have recorded notable achievements in the Northeast and other regions of the country. The occasion therefore serves as a moment to commend the bravery, professionalism and sacrifices of military personnel working tirelessly to address Nigeria’s security challenges and ensure peace for citizens.
The Federal Government reaffirmed its lasting appreciation for these courageous Nigerians and urged citizens, organisations and the private sector to continue offering generous support to serving personnel, wounded veterans and the families of fallen heroes during the remembrance period and beyond.
