Human rights activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has criticised Nigerian music star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, over his recent meeting with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
Sowore questioned the singer’s decision to meet Wike shortly after the Osun State governorship election, which was won by Davido’s uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke.
Davido and Adeleke visited Wike at his Abuja residence on Thursday, days after the August 15 governorship election in which Adeleke secured a second term. Reports of the meeting emerged alongside a video showing Davido and Wike engaging in a light-hearted exchange about the election outcome.
In the video, Davido appeared to joke about the election result, telling Wike that he had won and “beat” his side.
The meeting attracted criticism from Sowore, who took to his X account on Friday to question the singer’s interaction with the FCT minister.
Sowore accused political actors of setting aside their public differences when their interests converge, while questioning Davido’s decision to engage with Wike so soon after the election.
He wrote:
“Nigerian political hustlers will deceive the public, and the gullible will swallow the deception whole.”
Sowore went on to criticise what he described as Davido “genuflecting” before Wike, barely a week after the political contest in Osun.
He also referred to the violence reported around the election period and argued that the meeting illustrated the convergence of interests among political actors despite their public disagreements.
“Behind all the public grandstanding, insults, and manufactured outrage, these political actors know exactly where their interests converge,” Sowore said.
He subsequently described the political actors involved as “dissemblers,” “gerrymanderers,” “carpetbaggers,” “political hustlers” and “lying machines.”
“When their interests are at stake, the masks come off,” he added.
The meeting between Davido, Adeleke and Wike followed a series of engagements by the re-elected Osun governor in Abuja. Adeleke had earlier met President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, where he presented his certificate of return following his victory in the August 15 election.
The Osun election was won by Adeleke of the Accord Party with 511,067 votes, while the All Progressives Congress candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, polled 444,815 votes.
Sowore’s criticism comes amid continued political reactions to the election and the alliances and relationships that have emerged following the poll.
