Supreme Court judgment a distraction Seyi Makinde
Supreme Court judgment a distraction Seyi Makinde: Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has dismissed the Supreme Court’s judgment on local government financial autonomy as a distraction, urging his colleagues to focus on productivity rather than getting bogged down in the legal battle. Makinde argued that the real issue facing the country is its lack of productivity, noting that the emphasis on sharing funds from Abuja detracts from the need to increase output and self-sufficiency.
the association
Meanwhile, the pan-Yoruba socio-political and cultural association, Afenifere, has condemned the Supreme Court’s judgment as a judicial conspiracy against true federalism and democracy. The group views the judgment as a retrogressive declaration that undermines the principles of federalism and strengthens the federal government’s grip on power. Afenifere also criticized the creation of the Ministry of Livestock Development, seeing it as a euphemism for the re-introduction of cattle colonies and RUGA policies, which aim to appropriate land from states.
the local Admin
The Supreme Court’s judgment declared that state governors cannot hold funds allocated for local government administrations and that a state government lacks the power to appoint a caretaker committee, recognizing only democratically elected local government councils. However, Makinde and Afenifere see this judgment as a distraction from the real issues facing the country, including hunger, anger, and a lack of productivity.
Afenifere insists that the way forward for Nigeria is a holistic restructuring of the polity to re-enact the fundamental principles of true federalism, including recognizing the local government system as an exclusive preserve of the states. The group argues that this is the only way to ensure the country’s growth and progress.
