The Archbishop of Bendel Province of the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, His Grace, the Most Revd Cyril Odibor Oghene Odutemu has urged prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members from the southern part of Nigeria to henceforth reject postings to the northern part of the country until the security situation in the country gets back to normal.
Archbishop Odetemu who made the call at the ninth synod of the Diocese of Ughelli, Delta State pointed out that the rate NYSC members who are on National assignment are being abducted is alarming.
In his words:
‘’The current ordeal being suffered by our daughter, Miss Faith Eguono from Aladja who was deployed to Jigawa State but was kidnapped by terrorists between Abuja and Kaduna on her way to Jigawa is one too many of such experiences by our children.
“We cannot continue to witness our young children being taken captive and sometimes killed to reduce our population in the name of serving our fatherland.
‘’Youth service is done by the living. We, therefore, call on the federal government to as a matter of urgency make all young graduates serve in their respective states of origin or suspend the programme until the atmosphere is safe for our graduates.
“The safety of our children is paramount. We, therefore, call on our States Houses of Assemblies to enact legislation to protect our children by making them serve in their states of origin.’’
