The ongoing grid failures are a source of shame for the nation: Residents
of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are fed up with the frequent national grid collapses,
calling it a national embarrassment. The latest collapse occurred on Monday,
plunging the country into darkness, but power has been partially restored as of Tuesday.
Consumers in areas like Kubwa, Lugbe, and Kuje are demanding a lasting solution from the Federal Government .
Many are frustrated, like Mrs. Eniola Oluseyi, who finds the recurring grid failures embarrassing.
“It’s high time the government finds a way to end this problem,” she urges. Others,
like Mr. Chibuzor Okoye and Mrs. Priscilla Akpan, echo her sentiments, emphasizing
that these collapses harm the country’s image and hinder progress.
the frequent collapses
The frequency of these collapses is alarming, with some residents questioning the
effectiveness of the power sector’s funding. Mr. Usman Aliyu notes that despite significant investments,
the grid remains unreliable. The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC)
acknowledged the collapse on Twitter, promising to work with stakeholders to
restore power once the grid stabilizes.
This isn’t the first time Nigeria has experienced grid collapses. In September 2023,
the country faced multiple collapses, causing widespread power outages .
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) attributed one of these incidents to a fire outbreak on the Kainji/Jebba 330kV transmission line
