Three Enugu Lawmakers Dump Labour Party, Rejoin PDP in Major Political Realignment

On Thursday, a significant political shift occurred in Enugu State as three key lawmakers officially resigned from the Labour Party and returned to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), signaling a notable realignment within the state’s political landscape. The politicians who made this move are Hon. Chidi Mark Obetta, the representative for Nsukka/Igbo-Eze South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives; Hon. Dennis Agbo, who represents Igbo-Eze North/Udenu in the same chamber; and Hon. Malachy Onyechi, a member of the Enugu State House of Assembly representing Nsukka West. Their return was marked by a formal welcome at the PDP State Secretariat.

Dr. Martin Chukwunweike, the PDP Chairman in Enugu State, described their return as a “homecoming,” emphasizing that their rejoining the party would add considerable strength to the PDP’s political machinery. He praised their decision as a demonstration of leadership and a clear indication that they are placing the welfare of their constituents above personal political ambitions.

Adding his voice to the event, Hon. Chijioke Edeoga, a former Labour Party gubernatorial candidate, lauded the lawmakers’ choice, stating it reflects renewed confidence in the PDP’s direction under Governor Peter Mbah. Edeoga expressed hope that the returning lawmakers would contribute meaningfully to both the party and the broader development goals of the state.

During the event, each lawmaker explained their decision. Hon. Obetta highlighted that his return was driven by the belief that the PDP offers a more effective platform for serving his constituents. Hon. Agbo stressed the importance of unity and collective leadership in advancing the interests of Enugu State. Meanwhile, Hon. Onyechi thanked the PDP for the warm reception, noting that his return was aligned with his commitment to better governance and service delivery in Nsukka West.
