Tinubu Pledges to Upgrade Defence College, Calls for its Evolution into a Postgraduate University

During the graduation ceremony for Course 33 of the National Defence College, President Bola Tinubu addressed a diverse group of participants from 19 countries. The graduating class was made up of senior military officers, as well as officials from government ministries and agencies from Nigeria and allied nations. Specifically, the class included 25 officers from the Nigerian Army, 16 from the Navy, 12 from the Air Force, five from the Police, 18 from various government departments, and 23 international participants.

The President expressed his belief that the college, once fully equipped, should evolve into a Defence Postgraduate University. He confirmed that he has instructed the college’s Commandant to collaborate with the Minister of Defence to create a clear plan for upgrading the facilities. Tinubu acknowledged that while some progress has been made at the permanent site in Piwoyi, much more work is needed, and he committed his administration to completing the project.

In his address to the graduating officers, Tinubu urged them to be good ambassadors of the college and to uphold its core values of excellence, courage, patriotism, and integrity, which he called essential for a successful career. He also encouraged the international participants to maintain the friendships they built in Nigeria, allowing them to foster cooperation and solidarity between their nations and Nigeria.

The President praised the college for its role in developing human capital crucial for Nigeria’s security. He commended the Commandant and faculty for their dedication in preparing this group of strategic leaders. He acknowledged the intensity of the 48-week course and congratulated the graduates on their accomplishment. Tinubu also announced that he has directed relevant government bodies to review the recommendations proposed by the graduating class, particularly those related to strengthening indigenous manufacturing, which he deemed vital for national security and development.
