President Bola Tinubu has reiterated the necessity of establishing state police forces as a key component of his administration’s strategy to address rising insecurity across Nigeria. Speaking at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Tuesday during a courtesy visit by a high-level delegation of Katsina State leaders, led by Governor Dikko Radda, the president emphasized that the federal government is resolute in its efforts to tackle security challenges nationwide.
Tinubu ordered a comprehensive review of security strategies in Katsina, a state currently grappling with increased banditry and criminal activity. He also announced that the government would deploy advanced military assets, including surveillance drones and modern equipment, to enhance operations in the region. Furthermore, efforts will be made to train and strengthen the capacity of newly recruited forest guards, who will play a crucial role in patrolling and protecting rural areas.
Acknowledging Nigeria’s long-standing security difficulties, Tinubu expressed optimism that these issues can be overcome with commitment, coordination, and proper planning. He noted that weaknesses in border control and past lapses in security planning contributed to the current situation but assured Nigerians that corrective measures are now underway.
The president instructed security agencies to adopt renewed vigor and ensure he receives daily briefings on developments in Katsina. He reiterated his administration’s intention to create a framework for state policing and said a holistic approach is being developed to ensure its success.
Tinubu also highlighted that in early 2024, the federal government had constituted a committee to evaluate the feasibility and structure of state police. While the idea has received broad national backing, Vice President Kashim Shettima recently revealed that 20 states had not yet submitted their feedback.
During the visit, Tinubu paid tribute to former President Muhammadu Buhari, commending his leadership and promising to preserve his achievements. Katsina leaders, including former Governor Aminu Masari and Wazirin Katsina, Ibrahim Ida, thanked Tinubu for his support and urged further investments in infrastructure and security within the state.
