Tinubu Urges Military to Intensify Security Efforts as Nigeria Inducts New Combat Helicopters

President Bola Tinubu has called upon the Nigerian armed forces to significantly intensify their efforts to decisively address the country’s complex and multifaceted security issues. Emphasizing the importance of a capable and well-equipped military, he stated that national stability and the protection of democracy depend heavily on the readiness and strength of the armed forces.

Speaking through Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima during the induction of newly acquired Augusta A-109 Trekker helicopters into the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), Tinubu underlined the government’s dedication to strengthening the nation’s military capacity. The ceremony, held at the Presidential Air Fleet premises, also marked the 61st anniversary of the NAF. The Vice President stressed that these helicopters would serve as a strategic asset in combating threats such as terrorism, banditry, and oil theft. He further stated that the addition of the new aircraft reflects a deliberate move to ensure the Nigerian military remains agile, effective, and capable of rapid deployment across multiple conflict zones.

Despite financial limitations, Shettima highlighted that the federal government continues to invest in critical military hardware and training, signaling its unwavering commitment to national security. He emphasized the importance of regional cooperation, citing ongoing multinational efforts to restore peace in the Lake Chad region as a model for future collaborations.

Shettima also pointed out the evolving global security landscape, influenced by conflicts in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. He stressed that Nigeria must stay proactive and ensure that its armed forces are ready not only for domestic operations but also for regional and international peacekeeping missions.

Air Marshal Bala Hasan Abubakar, the Chief of Air Staff, praised the induction of the Augusta helicopters as a strategic enhancement to NAF’s operational capabilities. He revealed that the Air Force has received nine new aircraft since 2024, with 49 more expected over the next two years, including various helicopters, ground attack aircraft, and airlift planes. These assets aim to boost precision strikes, air mobility, and counterinsurgency operations.

Additionally, the NAF is actively training personnel both locally and abroad, and investing in research and development to maintain high-tech equipment. Notable progress includes retrofitting weapons systems and initiating plans for local production of munitions. Air Marshal Abubakar expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for his continued support and reaffirmed the NAF’s commitment to utilizing the new platforms to safeguard the nation’s interests.
