French President Emmanuel Macron presided over the G7 summit in France as the host nation’s leader, but it was U.S. President Donald Trump who stole the spotlight on Wednesday with a remark that underscored his confidence and influence at the gathering.
As he entered the morning session on the final day of the three-day summit, Trump, finding the other world leaders already seated, declared, “I’m the boss,” drawing laughter from those present.
Macron appeared to take the comment lightly and responded with a smile, asking the American leader how he was doing.
“Good, thank you,” Trump replied before taking his seat. The former businessman and television personality, widely known for hosting The Apprentice and its famous catchphrase, “You’re fired,” once again commanded attention at the international gathering.
Trump’s presence has been one of the defining features of the summit in the lakeside resort town of Evian, situated on the shores of Lake Geneva. His attendance came shortly after he secured an agreement aimed at ending hostilities with Iran and celebrated his 80th birthday, developments that further amplified interest in his participation.
French officials are likely pleased that Trump remained for the entirety of the summit and endorsed the final G7 communiqué. His full participation contrasts sharply with the previous summit in Canada, where he departed before the event concluded.
In a move highlighting the importance of U.S.-French relations, Macron extended a personal invitation to Trump for a dinner at the historic Palace of Versailles outside Paris after the summit’s conclusion on Wednesday.
However, mindful of criticism that he might appear overly accommodating toward the American president, Macron emphasized beforehand that the gathering at Versailles should not be viewed as a lavish state banquet or “gala” event. Instead, it was presented as a more restrained engagement following the close of the summit.
