The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has reiterated its ban on wild post-examination celebrations and other activities capable of disrupting peace and order on campus, warning that students who violate the directive will face disciplinary sanctions.
The Registrar of the institution, Dr. Chukwuka Icha, announced the renewed directive in a statement issued on Monday in Calabar, expressing concern over the increasing trend of disorderly celebrations by students, particularly finalists, after completing their examinations.
According to the registrar, some graduating students have continued to engage in unlawful celebrations characterised by reckless driving, the flying of colours and other disruptive activities capable of endangering lives and disturbing the university environment.
She urged all students, especially final-year students, to conduct themselves responsibly and comply with the institution’s regulations.
“The ban on wild celebrations within the campus, around the school gates and all cult-related activities remain in force.
“The management will not hesitate to sanction any student or group found violating the directive,” she stated.
Dr. Icha disclosed that the Acting Chief Security Officer had been directed to ensure strict enforcement of the ban across the university campus and its surrounding areas.
She also called on members of the university community to cooperate with the management by adhering to the directive in the interest of maintaining peace, safety and order.
The renewed warning comes against the backdrop of a serious road accident recorded on the university campus in 2024, involving final-year students who were celebrating the completion of their last examination paper.
The incident, which was linked to reckless post-examination celebrations, underscored the dangers associated with such activities and reinforced the university’s resolve to enforce stricter safety measures.
UNICAL management said the directive forms part of ongoing efforts to safeguard lives and property while promoting a conducive academic environment for all members of the university community.
