Valentine Ozigbo Defends Defection to APC, Says Move Was for Anambra’s Progress and National Impact

Valentine Ozigbo, a former governorship aspirant in Anambra State, has affirmed that he has no regrets over his decision to leave the Labour Party (LP) and join the All Progressives Congress (APC). Despite not securing the APC governorship ticket—losing to Nicholas Ukachukwu—Ozigbo remains confident in his choice to switch parties, which he said was driven by dissatisfaction with the internal workings of the LP.

During an interview on Arise Television’s The Morning Show aired on Friday, Ozigbo elaborated on his reasons for defecting. He explained that his decision came after a thorough personal evaluation and failed attempts to resolve lingering concerns within the Labour Party. According to him, the environment in the LP was no longer conducive, prompting him to seek a more viable political platform.

When asked directly if he regretted leaving the LP, Ozigbo responded without hesitation: “I have no regrets whatsoever.” He added that politicians choose to defect from their parties for various reasons. Some, he noted, are prompted by genuine concerns such as the failure of internal conflict resolution mechanisms, while others might have less noble motivations.

Ozigbo also commented on the broader trend of defections within Nigerian politics, particularly referencing recent exits from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta State. He said such moves are often the result of internal party dysfunctions or strategic political decisions.

On why he chose the APC specifically, Ozigbo said he undertook a detailed assessment of all major parties and concluded that the APC offered the best opportunity to enact meaningful change. He described his move as one rooted in a desire to link Anambra State to the federal center and ensure better democratic dividends for the people.

“I came into the APC with a noble purpose—to prioritize the interests of Anambra and seek a stronger connection with the central government,” he stated. “My ultimate goal is to help build a better Nigeria.”
