Van Dijk Demands Liverpool Redemption After ‘Unacceptable’ Season

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has challenged his teammates to make amends for what he described as an “unacceptable” campaign last season, urging the Reds to respond with a stronger showing in the new season.

Liverpool finished fifth in the Premier League and failed to win a trophy in a disappointing campaign that ultimately led to the departure of manager Arne Slot.

The setback came just a year after the club had lifted the English title. Liverpool lost 19 of their 56 matches in all competitions last season, including 12 defeats in the Premier League — only one fewer than their combined league defeats over the previous three seasons.

The Reds also failed to progress beyond the quarter-finals of the Champions League and FA Cup, while their League Cup campaign ended in the fourth round.

Van Dijk believes the disappointing season must serve as motivation as Liverpool look to rebuild and challenge for honours again.

“Last year was unacceptable. This year we have an opportunity to turn that around,” Van Dijk said.

“We all know how tough that will be but if you’re not up for the challenge, then you’re not at the right place. What I feel at the moment is everyone is up for the challenge. Let’s see how we go about it.”

The Dutch defender said the squad had nothing to prove to outsiders but needed to demonstrate its commitment to the club and its supporters.

“I don’t think we have a point to prove to anyone. We have to show how much we care, how much we want to fight for this badge and also realise how privileged we are to be playing for Liverpool,” he added.

Former Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola has been brought in as Liverpool seek to restore the high-intensity style of football that characterised the club’s most successful periods.

The squad has also undergone significant changes, with Mohamed Salah, Ibrahima Konate and Andrew Robertson leaving Anfield, while Curtis Jones is expected to join Inter Milan.

Spain winger Victor Munoz and Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet have arrived on permanent deals, while Barcelona centre-back Ronald Araujo has joined on loan.

With injuries also disrupting Liverpool last season, Van Dijk stressed the importance of keeping the squad fit enough to compete across all competitions.

“We need everyone to be fit. We need a squad which is able to compete on all four fronts, and that’s the only way to try to be successful,” he said.

Van Dijk expressed optimism about Iraola’s ability to bring greater energy and intensity to Liverpool, pointing to the style displayed by Bournemouth under the Spanish coach.

“If you look at Bournemouth last year, I think they were pretty exciting. I would say if we keep working, keep believing, keep showing our quality, then we can be very excited,” he said.

With the transfer window still open, Van Dijk said the team would wait to see whether further additions were made before focusing fully on the new campaign.

“Let’s see what the last couple of weeks of the transfer window will bring and then let’s go for it,” he said.
