Severe unrest broke out in the Gero community of Jos South Local Government Area, Plateau State, after the bodies of two murdered women were discovered early Monday morning.

The deaths triggered a wave of anger among local youths and women, who carried the victims’ remains directly to the local government secretariat to demand immediate government intervention and justice, blocking key roadways and halting traffic in the process.

The demonstration escalated as agitated protesters vandalized sections of the council headquarters, shattering window panes before security personnel arrived to restore order.

According to a local official, demonstrators arrived in massive numbers, transporting the victims’ bodies on a motorcycle while voicing suspicions regarding security forces’ potential involvement—claims that remain unverified. During the height of the chaotic demonstration, a police officer was reportedly assaulted by members of the crowd.

Community members expressed deep grief and frustration over the persistent violence plaguing the region, noting that innocent residents, particularly women and children, bear the heavy burden of ongoing insecurity.

Residents called upon both the federal and Plateau State governments to urgently bolster security patrols, locate the perpetrators, and prosecute those responsible to rebuild trust within the community.

Following the initial surge of unrest, security forces reinforced their presence around the secretariat and surrounding areas, bringing a gradual return to calm.
