Wike Revokes 762 Land Titles in Abuja, Targets Prominent Nigerians Over Unpaid Fees

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has revoked the Certificates of Occupancy (C-of-O) for 762 plots of land in Abuja due to non-payment of required fees. This action targets several prominent individuals and corporate organizations, signaling the administration’s commitment to enforcing compliance with the laws governing land ownership in the FCT. Additionally, Wike issued a two-week ultimatum to 614 other landowners to clear outstanding bills or face revocation of their Rights of Occupancy (R-of-O).

The affected plots are located in Maitama 1 District, a prime area in Abuja. Among the individuals whose C-of-O have been revoked are former President Muhammadu Buhari, former Chief Justice of Nigeria Walter Onnoghen, House Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, and Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani. Other notable names include former governors, senators, and lawmakers such as Rochas Okorocha, Dino Melaye, and Stella Oduah. Corporate entities like Julius Berger Nigeria and Honeywell Construction Limited are also on the list.

According to public notices issued by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), the revocations were made in line with Section 28 of the Land Use Act of 1978. This law empowers the minister to revoke land titles due to non-compliance with payment obligations or failure to meet development requirements.

Wike has emphasized his resolve to prioritize public interest over personal or elite privileges. Since assuming office in August 2023, he has undertaken several reforms, including revoking undeveloped land titles and standardizing the cost of obtaining C-of-O at ₦5 million, with a four-month payment window.

This crackdown reflects Wike’s determination to enforce compliance and transparency in land administration, even at the expense of influential individuals and entities. It underscores his administration’s focus on reforms that prioritize public good over elite interests.
