2025 COSAT Week: Army Advocates Indigenous Technology, Stronger Synergy to Tackle Evolving Security Challenges

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, has acknowledged the evolving nature of Nigeria’s security environment, describing it as one that demands innovative and flexible responses. Speaking at the 2025 edition of the Combat Support Arms Training (COSAT) Week in Kano, the Army Chief emphasized the need for adaptive strategies in the face of increasingly complex security threats across the country.

Represented at the event by the Chief of Training (Army), Major General Abubakar Ndalolo, Oluyede stressed that the Nigerian Army has made considerable adjustments to its structure, training frameworks, and operational doctrines to better address the nation’s security demands. He noted that these efforts have been bolstered through stronger collaboration with other branches of the military and various security agencies, enhancing the Army’s ability to fulfill its constitutional mandate effectively.

A key highlight of Oluyede’s address was his recognition of the pivotal role played by the Combat Support Arms—units such as artillery, engineering, signals, and intelligence. He stated that their expertise and operational contributions have been instrumental to the overall success of military operations nationwide. According to him, without adequate support in areas like firepower, engineering, communication, and intelligence, the Combat Arms would struggle to achieve success on the battlefield.

Oluyede commended the leadership of the Nigerian Army Corps of Artillery, Engineers, Signals, and Intelligence for their commitment to innovation, acquisition of cutting-edge resources, and dedication to continuous training. He further emphasized that platforms like COSAT Week provide an invaluable opportunity for both serving and retired senior officers to come together, review tactics, share ideas, and strategize more effective support for military operations.

He expressed hope that the outcome of the training week would contribute significantly to enhancing professionalism, combat preparedness, and efficient administration within the Army. This, he said, aligns with his Command Philosophy, which aims to transform the Nigerian Army into a highly motivated and combat-ready force operating seamlessly in joint and multi-agency environments.

In his remarks, the Commander Corps of Signals, Major General Nosakhare Ugbo, reiterated that the 2025 COSAT Week was designed to foster professionalism among personnel, encourage exchange of strategic ideas, and enhance operational support capabilities. He said this year’s theme, “Harnessing the Capacity of Combat Support Arms through Indigenous Technology for Effective Operational Support within a Joint and Multi-Agency Environment,” supports the Federal Government’s push for innovation and local content development.

Ugbo emphasized the importance of embracing indigenous technology to promote the Army’s self-sufficiency and enhance its ability to tackle both current and emerging security threats. He called for greater cooperation between the Army, other military services, academia, and key stakeholders, noting that such partnerships are crucial to building a modern, efficient, and resilient Nigerian Army.
