INEC Lifts Campaign Ban Ahead of 2026 FCT Area Council Elections, Warns Against Hate Speech and Unfair Practices

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially lifted the ban on election campaigns for the upcoming 2026 Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections, scheduled for Saturday, February 21, 2026. This decision was confirmed by Sam Olumekun, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, through a statement released on Wednesday. The announcement aligns with Section 94(1) of the Electoral Act 2022 and the timetable for the election, which is outlined in the Schedule of Activities.

Starting from Wednesday, September 24, 2025, political parties are now allowed to begin their campaigns, with the period for electioneering running until midnight on Thursday, February 19, 2026. During this time, parties and candidates can canvass for votes and promote their electoral messages. However, INEC emphasized the importance of adhering to campaign guidelines. The commission made it clear that the law prohibits the use of hate speech, abusive language, physical violence against opponents, and the destruction of campaign materials. These rules apply to all forms of campaigning, including rallies, processions, and meetings.

Olumekun also reminded political parties and candidates that all participants must have equal access to public facilities for media campaigns, advertising, rallies, and meetings. Furthermore, he stressed that incumbents should not use their position to gain an unfair advantage over competitors, as outlined in Section 95(2) of the Electoral Act. INEC called on all political stakeholders to comply fully with the electoral laws to ensure that campaigns remain peaceful, credible, and focused on relevant issues as the February 2026 elections approach.
