Bayelsa Police Begin Disciplinary Action Against Officers Seen Assaulting Tricycle Driver

The Bayelsa State Police Command has initiated disciplinary measures against several officers captured in a viral video that surfaced on Friday, showing the assault of a tricycle operator and the seizure of his tyre in Yentown, Bayelsa State.

In the footage, the officers were seen confronting the rider for allegedly operating without vehicle particulars. The situation escalated as the policemen reportedly struck the man repeatedly with their rifles and pinned him to the ground while forcefully taking his tyre, even as he struggled to stop them.

Reacting to the incident, the command’s spokesperson, Musa Muhammed, said in a statement on Saturday that the police authorities had taken note of the disturbing video circulating on social media, which allegedly depicts officers engaging in the physical abuse of a tricycle driver.

According to him, the officers involved have since been arrested, and internal disciplinary processes have been set in motion in line with the Police Act and other relevant regulations.

The Bayelsa State Commissioner of Police, Iyamah Edebor, strongly condemned the conduct of the officers, describing their actions as unacceptable and inconsistent with the standards of professional policing.

He emphasised that the command has zero tolerance for human rights violations, brutality or any form of unprofessional behaviour by its personnel.

Mr Edebor further reassured the public that the Bayelsa State Police Command remains committed to safeguarding the rights and safety of residents, while ensuring that policing across the state is carried out in a lawful, responsible and professional manner.
