South-East Ex-Governors Back Tinubu’s Second-Term Bid After Enugu Meeting

Former governors from Nigeria’s South-East region have thrown their weight behind Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term in office, following a meeting held in Enugu on Tuesday.

The endorsement was announced in a communiqué issued after deliberations by the newly inaugurated South East Forum of former Governors. Those in attendance included Sullivan Chime, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, Chris Ngige, Okezie Ikpeazu, and Martin Elechi.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Minister of Works and former Ebonyi State governor, Dave Umahi, disclosed that the forum was officially established on April 7, 2026, with the aim of supporting current South-East governors and offering guidance on both regional and national matters.

Umahi noted that several former governors, including Ikedi Ohakim, Orji Uzor Kalu, Chimaroke Nnamani, Theodore Orji, and Virginia Etiaba, were unable to attend due to prior engagements such as medical trips and other commitments. He, however, expressed confidence that a large majority of former governors in the region would participate in future meetings.

According to the communiqué, the forum is open to all former South-East governors irrespective of political affiliation and is designed to promote unity while strengthening backing for incumbent leaders in the zone.

The group commended President Tinubu for appointing individuals from the South-East into key positions and for ongoing infrastructure development projects within the region and across the country. It also declared its support for his re-election bid, noting that serving governors from the region share the same stance.

In addition, the forum praised current South-East governors for their performance in areas such as infrastructure, security, and empowerment initiatives.

Umahi further revealed plans for the forum to work closely with sitting governors to enhance collaboration and increase awareness of government programmes.

Addressing the absence of former Anambra State governor Peter Obi, he explained that not all former governors were present at the meeting but assured that broader participation is expected at subsequent gatherings.

The communiqué emphasised that the forum is not intended to replace the existing South-East Governors’ Forum but will instead complement its efforts by identifying areas where it can provide support.
