IGP Orders Dismissal, Prosecution of Officers Over Fatal Effurun Shooting

Rilwan Olutunji Disu, Inspector-General of the Nigeria Police Force, has directed swift disciplinary measures against officers implicated in the fatal shooting of Mene Ogidi in Effurun, Delta State.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, the IGP condemned the incident, describing it as unlawful, unprofessional, and inconsistent with the standards of the Force. He stated that the officer at the centre of the case, ASP Nuhu Usman, violated established procedures and regulations governing the use of firearms.

Disu explained that all officers connected to the incident were immediately transferred from Delta State to the Force Headquarters, where they underwent internal investigations by the Force Disciplinary Committee and the Orderly Room Tribunal. The findings confirmed misconduct and breaches of operational guidelines.

According to him, both panels recommended the dismissal of ASP Usman and other involved officers, along with their prosecution for unlawful homicide. He added that the recommendations have been forwarded to the Police Service Commission for final approval, after which the officers will be handed over for prosecution.

The IGP stressed that the actions of the officers were individual violations and do not reflect the core values of the Police Force, reiterating that there is zero tolerance for misconduct within its ranks.

He extended condolences to the family of the deceased and assured them that justice would be pursued transparently. He also urged the public to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands, while reaffirming the Force’s commitment to accountability and reform.
