Tinubu Appoints Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu as Foreign Affairs Minister, Nominates Enikanolaiye as Junior Minister

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a major reshuffle in Nigeria’s diplomatic leadership, appointing Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu as the country’s new Minister of Foreign Affairs following the resignation of Yusuf Tuggar. Tuggar is said to have stepped down as he prepares for possible political engagement ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In addition, the President has nominated Sola Enikanolaiye for the role of Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, with the appointment awaiting confirmation by the National Assembly. The changes were formally announced in a statement issued by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga on Wednesday.

According to the presidency, the restructuring of the foreign affairs portfolio is part of a broader strategy to strengthen Nigeria’s diplomatic effectiveness and better align its foreign policy with the administration’s economic priorities. The government emphasized that the move is intended to enhance efficiency, deepen strategic global engagement, and build stronger international partnerships that can support national development goals.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu brings significant experience to her new role, having previously served as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and maintained a long-standing presence in diplomatic circles. Her appointment signals a renewed focus on economic diplomacy, regional stability, and expanding Nigeria’s influence on the global stage. The presidency expressed confidence in her ability to lead the country’s international relations, citing her deep understanding of global affairs and Nigeria’s foreign policy dynamics.

Meanwhile, Enikanolaiye is regarded as a highly experienced career diplomat with an extensive track record in international service. He has previously served as Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and International Relations and has represented Nigeria in several key diplomatic missions, including postings in Addis Ababa, London, Ottawa, Belgrade, and New Delhi. His nomination is expected to provide continuity and institutional strength within the foreign service.

President Tinubu congratulated both appointees and urged them to prioritise Nigeria’s national interests in their assignments. He also tasked them with advancing economic diplomacy, strengthening bilateral and multilateral relations, and improving the welfare and protection of Nigerians living abroad.
