The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has taken into custody a man identified as Akaninyene Udo for allegedly spreading a social media post that triggered anxiety and security concerns among residents of Eket and surrounding communities.
Udo, who is known on Facebook as “AK Philo,” was arrested after allegedly sharing a post containing the message, “Eket get ready for us,” alongside a photograph of an armed bandit.
The Command’s spokesperson, DSP Timfon John, disclosed the development in a statement issued in Uyo on Monday. She explained that the post quickly went viral, causing fear and unease among members of the public and prompting security agencies to launch an investigation.
According to the police, the state remains peaceful, with the overall security situation stable and under control, assuring residents that there is no imminent threat.
The statement noted that the suspect was apprehended following a detailed investigation into the alarming online publication, which authorities believe contributed to public panic in Eket and nearby areas.
Police further revealed that investigations into the case have been concluded and that the suspect will soon be arraigned in court. Authorities also stated that efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend any other individuals who may have played a role in creating or circulating the controversial content.
The Command warned residents against publishing or sharing unverified security reports, false alarms, or misleading information on social media, stressing that such actions are punishable under the law.
Members of the public were encouraged to confirm security-related information through official sources before forwarding it to others. The police emphasized that anyone found responsible for spreading false or inciting information would be tracked down and prosecuted.
Residents were also urged to remain calm, obey the law, and promptly report suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through designated emergency contact lines.
The Command reiterated its commitment to maintaining peace across the state, assuring citizens that security agencies will continue to implement proactive measures aimed at protecting lives and property.
