The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has issued a firm charge to medical practitioners across the country, urging doctors to take the lead in combating quackery and strictly upholding professional ethics to safeguard the healthcare system.

Speaking at a recent leadership gathering, the association emphasized that the proliferation of illegal operators and unlicensed medical practitioners poses a severe threat to public health, patient safety, and the integrity of the medical profession in Nigeria. The NMA leadership stressed that registered doctors must actively police the sector by identifying, reporting, and exposing illegal practices within their respective jurisdictions rather than remaining passive observers.

Beyond confronting external threats, the association highlighted the critical need for internal accountability and adherence to ethical standards. Doctors were reminded of their fundamental duty to prioritize patient well-being, maintain strict confidentiality, and practice strictly within their authorized scopes of competence. The NMA cautioned that unethical conduct, professional negligence, or collusion with unqualified individuals severely erodes public trust in the healthcare infrastructure.

To address these challenges effectively, the association called for closer collaboration between state chapters, regulatory authorities, and law enforcement agencies to ensure that offenders face swift judicial consequences. Additionally, the NMA advocated for continuous professional development and public education campaigns to help citizens identify certified healthcare providers and report suspicious activities.
