2027: INEC Final List Intensifies Battle for 109 Senate Seats

The Independent National Electoral Commission has released the final list of candidates for the 2027 general elections, setting the stage for a fierce contest for the 109 senatorial seats across Nigeria.

The publication brings greater clarity to the candidates who will contest the Senate election under the various political parties and marks another major step in preparations for the 2027 polls.

The Senate contest is expected to attract significant political attention as parties and their candidates begin to intensify their campaigns across the country.

The final list follows the completion of the nomination and substitution processes by political parties. Under the electoral timetable, INEC was scheduled to publish the final list of presidential and National Assembly candidates on September 12, 2026.

The commission had earlier published the personal particulars and credentials of candidates, giving political parties, aspirants and members of the public an opportunity to scrutinise the information submitted by those seeking elective offices.

With the final list now released, attention is expected to shift towards the various senatorial contests, with incumbent lawmakers, former politicians and newcomers set to battle for seats in the 10th Senate.

The 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for January 16, 2027, according to the electoral timetable.

The release of the final list is also expected to settle uncertainties surrounding candidates whose nominations had been affected by party disputes, substitutions or other changes during the nomination process.

Political parties are now expected to focus fully on their campaigns as the race towards the 2027 general elections gathers momentum.
