Youths sets police station on fire over community crisis in Ebonyi

The crisis in Effium community in the Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, Southeast Nigeria, took a disturbing turn on Sunday as suspected Ezza warriors set fire to a police station in the area. The station served as a base for peacekeeping operatives deployed in the community.

Effium and Ezza-Effium people have been embroiled in a bitter communal conflict for the past three years, resulting in numerous fatalities, displacement of thousands, and significant property damage. The state government had deployed a joint security team to maintain peace and resolve the conflict. However, the violence and destruction have persisted, with intermittent clashes between the two groups.

Over the weekend, the crisis reignited, leading to the burning of the police station. The Ebonyi State Police Command spokesperson, Onome Onovwakpoyeya, confirmed the resurgence of hostilities and the destruction of the station but refuted claims that the police officers stationed there had run out of ammunition to defend against the attacks.

According to the police spokesperson, Ezza warriors launched an assault on Effium communities but were repelled by security agents. In the ensuing gun battle, the colonial-era building used as a police station was set ablaze. Fortunately, there were no reported casualties among the police officers, and no loss of arms or ammunition occurred.

Reinforcements have been dispatched to the area, and the situation has been brought under control. The Commissioner of Police, Faleye Olaleye, issued a stern warning to the aggressors, urging them to lay down their arms or face the full force of the law.

The ongoing communal crisis between the Ezza and Izzi communities has posed a persistent challenge for the authorities. Despite the presence of military and police personnel stationed in the conflict zone, the tensions have repeatedly escalated. Efforts to mediate and restore lasting peace to the region remain elusive.

The recent attack on the police station underscores the volatile nature of the situation and highlights the urgent need for effective resolution. It is crucial for all parties involved to engage in dialogue, prioritize peaceful coexistence, and find sustainable solutions to the underlying issues driving the conflict.

The Ebonyi State government and relevant security agencies must intensify their efforts to restore peace, protect lives and property, and hold those responsible for the violence accountable. Addressing the root causes of the conflict and promoting reconciliation and understanding among the communities are essential for achieving long-term stability in the region.
