The Enugu State Chapter of the Guild of Public Affairs Analysts of Nigeria (GPAAN) has expressed strong disapproval over the recent raid on Urban Radio, Enugu, by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). In a statement issued on October 15, 2024, the guild condemned the EFCC agents’ actions, particularly the forceful removal of radio presenter Favour Ekoh while she was live on air. This incident occurred on October 14, 2024, and was described as being conducted in a “gestapo” manner, reminiscent of oppressive periods in Nigeria’s past when the media was frequently silenced through intimidation and harassment.
The guild noted that despite Nigeria’s current democratic environment, the EFCC’s conduct in this instance resembled actions typical of an authoritarian regime, undermining fundamental freedoms. While the guild acknowledges the EFCC’s legitimate authority to perform its duties, it emphasized that such operations must adhere to established rules and procedures. The arrest of a journalist in the middle of a live broadcast is viewed as a blatant attack on free speech and a dangerous attempt to intimidate members of the media.
GPAAN stressed that this incident constitutes a serious violation of journalistic rights, which are protected by the Nigerian constitution. The organization has called on the EFCC’s national leadership to thoroughly investigate the situation and ensure that the officers responsible for the inappropriate actions are held accountable. The guild further warned that such behavior could damage the cooperative relationship that has existed between the EFCC and the media over the years, potentially jeopardizing future collaboration.
The press release was signed by GPAAN’s Chairman, Dr. Ambrose Igboke, and Secretary, Dr. Chikezie Obasi, who urged the EFCC to take immediate corrective measures to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.
