A Day of Tributes, Joy as Prof. Florence Orabueze Celebrates 60th Birthday in Enugu

It was a gathering of family, friends, academics, traditional rulers and well-wishers on Saturday, June 13, 2026, as Prof. Florence Onyebuchi Orabueze celebrated her 60th birthday anniversary in Enugu.

The celebration began with a thanksgiving Mass at Maria Rosa Mystica Catholic Church, Brick Houses, Republic Layout, Enugu, where the celebrant, accompanied by friends, colleagues, her husband, Chief Sir Alexander Ogechukwu Orabueze, children, grandchildren, and other family members, thanked God for six decades of life, good health and accomplishments.

The Mass was celebrated by Rev. Fr. Prof. Felix Ugwuozo, with the former Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Dr. Donatus Onuigbo, and some other priests.

Speaking during the thanksgiving service, Fr. Ugwuozo described Prof. Orabueze as a woman who has consistently used her God-given gifts and resources to assist others. He commended her humility, generosity and commitment to the service of God and humanity, noting that many people have benefited from her kindness over the years.

The priest, choir, and the congregation together, sang, prayed and wished her a happy birthday, followed by the blessing from the priest. The celebrant also had the chance thank the priests and every other person who made it to the church to celebrate the Thanksgiving Mass with her. She also renewed her vow on helping and serving people.

Immediately after the church service, were pleasantries and pictures taking, before every one gradually started moving to Nwandu Hall, Sunshine Hotel, Presidential Road, Independence Layout, Enugu, where the reception took place.

 

The event attracted personalities from the academic community, traditional institutions, professional bodies and the business sector.

 

One of the high points of the event was the breaking of Kola-nut by His Royal Majesty, Igwe Ikechukwu Samuel Asadu (Ogadagidi) of Adem Ani Ancient Kingdom, Nsukka Local Government Area.

 

As the programme progressed, several dignitaries were recognised, including Dr Christ C. Igbokwe – the formal Registrar , University of Nigeria Nsukka. Engr. Sikiru Saluwu – the Deputy Director ICT (UNN). Prof. Aloysius Micheals Okolie – The Vice Chancellor, Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), alongside many others.

 

Guests were later entertained with food and drinks as friends and associates exchanged pleasantries and shared memories about the celebrant.

 

During the goodwill messages, speaker after speaker described Prof. Orabueze as an exceptional scholar, administrator and mentor.

 

During some remarks, it was noted that the institution was fortunate to have someone of her calibre, adding that she is hardworking, and her contributions have helped in advancing the university’s academic and administrative goals.

 

Star Baby, while paying tribute to the celebrant, described her as a beautiful soul and a caring big sister.

 

Also speaking, Prof. Adaku Bridget Ezeibe said she sees Prof. Orabueze as a mother because of the encouragement and support she has received from her over the shot period they have been close to each other. According to her, the celebrant has continued to inspire many younger academics to strive for excellence.

 

On behalf of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Nigeria, Nsukka chapter, Prof. Christ Mbah congratulated the celebrant on attaining the age of 60 and wished her many more years of good health and fulfilment.

 

Many of the speakers who mounted the podium shared similar testimonies about the celebrant’s contributions to education, mentorship and institutional development.

 

The atmosphere became even more lively during the wine toast as guests raised their glasses in honour of Prof. Orabueze and wished her continued success in all her endeavours.

 

The son to the celebrant who flew in from Spain to celebrate the mother also gave a speech – his speech centered on the fact that her mom is a fighter, who stands and encourages everyone close to her, the family most especially.

 

Perhaps her husband, Chief Sir Alexander Ogechukwu Orabueze, was invited to speak. Describing his wife as one of the best things that had happened to him, he said she has remained a supportive partner throughout their years together.

 

He praised her beauty, intelligence and strength of character, while advising young men to pay attention to qualities such as intelligence, brilliant, good character and understanding when choosing a life partner.

 

The event later moved to the cutting of the birthday cake, with the celebrant joined by her husband, children and grandchildren.

 

This was followed by dancing, presentation of gifts and photo sessions as guests took turns to celebrate with the professor.

 

In her remarks, Prof. Orabueze thanked God for His faithfulness in her life. She also expressed appreciation to her husband, children, grandchildren, relatives, friends and colleagues for their support and presence at the event.

 

She particularly thanked the dignitaries who honoured her invitation, members of the media who covered the celebration, as well as organisations including Twisco Chocolates, Viva Company and others whose contributions helped make the event successful.

 

You cannot say you are serving God, if you are not serving other human beings – Emphasis on ” Let My People Go “, She urged the academic staffs who are holding people to Let Them Go. If you are here and you are holding anybody in different Degrees, be it Masters, PHD, this is the time to Let Them Go, she said.

 

Born in 1966, Professor Florence Onyebuchi Orabueze is one of Nigeria’s distinguished academics. A Professor of English and Literary Studies at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, she has authored numerous scholarly works, including poetry collections, essays and the novel *Men Behind the Masks*.

 

She has served in several leadership positions at the University of Nigeria, including as the first female Director of the Institute of African Studies, Director of UNN Press Limited, Director of UNN Bookshop Limited, and currently serves as Director of the Institute of Maritime Studies, University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus.

 

Married to Chief Sir Alexander Ogechukwu Orabueze and blessed with four children, Prof. Orabueze’s 60th birthday celebration was not only a celebration of age but also of a life dedicated to scholarship, leadership and service to humanity.
