Abia State Pushes For World-Class Electricity Market, Holds Stakeholder Consultation On New Regulations

The Abia State Government has restated its determination to develop a modern and efficient electricity market capable of ensuring steady power supply, attracting investment, and safeguarding consumer interests across the state.

This position was expressed during a public consultation on the draft electricity regulations organised by the Abia State Electricity Regulatory Authority, where stakeholders, consumers, and energy experts gathered to contribute to the proposed framework for the state’s power sector.

Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Ikechukwu Monday, said the administration of Governor Alex Otti is committed to building an electricity system that benefits all residents and businesses.

He explained that the consultation reflects the government’s commitment to openness and inclusiveness in reforming the energy sector, noting that consumers remain central to the planned electricity market.

According to him, the administration’s goal is to create a world-class electricity market where all stakeholders, especially consumers, play an active role in shaping the system.

The commissioner also praised ASERA for drafting the regulations and said the engagement was necessary to gather feedback from the public, stressing that reliable electricity remains key to economic development in the state.

He further disclosed that Aba Power and the Geometric Group have installed over 120,000 electricity meters within the past six months in their operational areas, with plans to extend similar efforts to other parts of the state.

In a keynote address, the Chairman of the Abia State Electricity Advisory Council, Sam Amadi, said the consultation was designed to improve service delivery, strengthen consumer trust, and ensure quicker resolution of complaints within the electricity system.

He added that active public participation is essential for building a credible regulatory framework capable of sustaining the state’s electricity market.

Earlier, the Chairman of ASERA, Emeka Onyegbule, said the forum was created to allow citizens and stakeholders to contribute ideas that would shape the regulatory environment for the sector.

He explained that the process serves as a platform for reviewing ideas, addressing concerns, and refining policies that align with the government’s power sector objectives.

Onyegbule added that the initiative represents a key milestone in implementing the Electricity Act 2023 and the Abia State Electricity Law 2025, which provide the legal foundation for a sub-national electricity market.

He reaffirmed ASERA’s commitment to building a transparent, efficient, and investor-friendly electricity system that supports economic growth and improves service delivery.

Also speaking, the Lead Consultant on Power at the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, Odion Omonfoman, described ASERA’s establishment as an important step toward strengthening the state’s electricity market.

He emphasised that public engagement and regulatory transparency are critical to the long-term success of electricity reforms, while commending the state for its swift implementation of relevant laws and inclusive governance approach.
