The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has formally announced former Minister of Transportation and former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, as its vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 presidential election.
Amaechi’s nomination positions him as the running mate to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on the party’s ticket for the forthcoming general election.
The announcement was made on Monday in a statement issued by the ADC’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, through the party’s official X platform. According to the party, Amaechi’s selection followed extensive consultations with stakeholders across the country.
The ADC explained that the decision was reached after the conclusion of its presidential primary, in which Amaechi emerged as the runner-up candidate.
In the statement, the party described Amaechi’s emergence as a strategic move aimed at strengthening its presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 polls.
The ADC portrayed the Atiku-Amaechi pairing as a union of experienced political leaders with the competence, national outlook and leadership credentials needed to tackle Nigeria’s pressing challenges.
According to the party, the alliance represents more than a conventional political arrangement, describing it as a partnership between two seasoned statesmen capable of providing the leadership required to steer the country through its current difficulties.
The opposition party also highlighted Amaechi’s extensive political career, noting his service as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, two-term Governor of Rivers State and Minister of Transportation.
It argued that few contemporary Nigerian politicians possess such a broad blend of legislative and executive experience, making him a valuable addition to the presidential ticket.
The ADC further expressed confidence that Amaechi’s political influence across the South-South region and other parts of Southern Nigeria would enhance the party’s nationwide appeal and strengthen its electoral prospects.
According to the party, the Atiku-Amaechi ticket reflects a national balance capable of connecting different regions, generations and political interests across the country.
The party maintained that it is fully prepared to provide leadership, foster national unity and deliver effective governance if elected into office.
The ADC also stated that the partnership would bolster its coalition-building efforts ahead of the 2027 elections and offer Nigerians what it described as a credible alternative focused on economic revitalisation, improved security, job creation and national cohesion.
