The governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Kano State, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, has selected Mustapha Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as his running mate for the 2027 governorship election.
The announcement was made on Monday by Gwarzo’s spokesperson, Ibrahim Shuaibu, who said the decision followed extensive consultations with party leaders and key stakeholders across the state.
According to Shuaibu, the choice of Mustapha Kwankwaso is part of the party’s strategy to strengthen its electoral prospects and consolidate support ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“The governorship candidate of our great party, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, has selected Mustapha Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as his running mate for the 2027 governorship election in Kano State,” he stated.
He described the vice-governorship nominee as a loyal and committed party member whose emergence reflects the NDC’s commitment to unity, inclusiveness and effective representation.
Shuaibu added that the selection is expected to bolster the party’s support base across Kano and enhance its chances in what is expected to be a highly competitive governorship contest.
Mustapha Kwankwaso is the son of former Kano State Governor and National Leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, one of the most influential political figures in Northern Nigeria.
Political observers believe his nomination could further strengthen the influence of the Kwankwasiyya Movement within the NDC as political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 elections.
The development comes as the party continues efforts to consolidate its structures, expand grassroots support and position itself as a formidable force in Kano State, one of Nigeria’s most politically significant states.
Gwarzo, a former Deputy Governor of Kano State, emerged as the NDC governorship candidate following consultations among party stakeholders and leaders.
With the selection of his running mate, the party appears set to intensify mobilization and campaign activities ahead of the next electoral cycle.
