Premier League champions Arsenal are closing in on a deal to sign Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa as manager Mikel Arteta looks to strengthen his defence ahead of the new season.
According to The Athletic on Wednesday, talks between Arsenal and Aston Villa have advanced, with discussions at ownership level helping to narrow the gap over the defender’s valuation.
Arsenal have stepped up their search for defensive reinforcements following injuries to William Saliba and Jurrien Timber, leaving the club in need of additional cover at the back.
Konsa, 28, has emerged as one of Arsenal’s leading targets because of his versatility and ability to operate both as a central defender and at right-back.
The England international has reportedly been high on Arsenal’s shortlist throughout the summer, with the club now working to finalise an agreement with Villa.
Konsa returned to Aston Villa for pre-season training on Monday after being given an extended break following his involvement in the World Cup with England.
He started every match for England until the 2-1 defeat to Argentina, when he came on as a 72nd-minute substitute.
The defender has two years remaining on his Aston Villa contract, having signed a five-year deal with the club in September 2023.
Konsa joined Villa from Brentford in 2019 and has since made 286 appearances for the club. He featured 48 times in all competitions last season as Villa won the Europa League and finished fourth in the Premier League.
His consistency under manager Unai Emery has made him one of Villa’s most reliable defenders.
Arsenal had also maintained an interest in Bayer Leverkusen defender Jarell Quansah as they assessed alternative defensive options.
The potential arrival of Konsa has generated excitement among Arsenal supporters on social media, with many praising his Premier League experience and versatility.
Some fans also pointed to the need for additional defensive cover given the current injury situation involving Saliba and Timber.
One supporter described the potential signing as a “very serious defensive signing”, highlighting Konsa’s Premier League experience, composure on the ball and ability to play in multiple defensive positions.
Another fan said the move would provide Arsenal with greater depth at the back, particularly with Saliba expected to spend time recovering from injury.
If completed, Konsa’s transfer would give Arteta another experienced defensive option as Arsenal prepare to defend their Premier League title and compete on multiple fronts in the coming campaign.
