Designated Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Matthew Kukah, has expressed deep concern over the persistent persecution of Christians in Northern Nigeria. Speaking at the Silver Jubilee Anniversary of the Order of the Knights of St Mulumba Nigeria Eko Subordinate Council, Kukah lamented the lack of consequences for perpetrators of violence against Christians and the destruction of Christian properties. He highlighted several instances of violence, including the killing of priests and the burning of churches, without any charges or convictions.
Kukah also addressed the issue of ethnic colouration given to the Christian faith in Nigeria, emphasizing the need to move beyond such attitudes. He urged Christians to remain steadfast and sacrifice themselves for the growth of Christianity, stressing that the faith knows no political or ethnic boundaries.
The bishop shared personal experiences, including the loss of a seminarian and a priest, as well as the kidnapping of his priests. Despite these challenges, he expressed his determination to continue preaching the gospel, even in the face of adversity. Kukah’s message emphasized the importance of martyrdom and the need for Christians to come to terms with the realities of persecution.
The event, themed ‘Christian Martyrdom in Nigeria…a Building Block or Stumbling Block to Salvation or Patriotism,’ aimed to highlight the challenges faced by Christians in Nigeria and promote unity and solidarity among believers. The Worthy Grand Knight of Knights of St Mulumba Eko Sub Council, Sir Tony Nnachetta, also spoke at the event, expressing gratitude for the Lord’s kindness and emphasizing the importance of sacrifice and service to others.
