Enugu State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Barrister Lloyd Ikechukwu Ekweremadu, has advocated for Reformative justice rather than retributive justice as alternative for sentencing convicts involved in criminality.
Speaking at a Stakeholders Consultative Forum On the Operationalization Of Community Sentencing In Enugu State Justice System, held at the Multi- Door Court, Ministry of Justice, he noted that Reformative justice is a better way to reforming convicts, adding that it will also help to decongest Correctional Centres.
He thanked the organisers of the forum for inviting him to contribute to Enugu State Justice System,he urged the Stakeholders to make reforms that convicts who committed minor offences should not be put in the same prison with in-mates with serious offences
In his address, the Executive Director of Carmelite Prisoners Interest Organisation, (CAPIO), Reverend Father Isiguzo, stated that the objective of the Stakeholders Forum, is to strengthen the mechanisms for the Utilization of the Community Service, as an alternative to imprisonment for Convictions involving minor offences in Enugu State Justice System and as a way of helping towards decongest Correctional Centres in Enugu State.
He noted that non-custodial measures will benefit the society, adding, that it is critical for the court to recommend non- custodial measures for minor offenders.
In his contribution , the retired Arch-Bishop of Enugu Ecclesiastical Province Arch- Bishop Emmanuel Chukwuma , regretted that Custodial Centres are congested, lack basic utilities and were not reformative.
Earlier, the representative of the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice Barrister Ikechukwu Ezenwukwa, Justice C. O Onyia, of the Justice Reform Team and the Comptroller, Enugu Correctional Centre, Mr Nicholas Obiakor, in their separate speeche, urged the Stakeholders to work towards reforming Enugu State Justice System to be in tune with international best practices.
