The Delta State Police Command has detained an Assistant Superintendent of Police, Nuhu Usman, and transferred him to Abuja for disciplinary proceedings over the fatal shooting of a 28-year-old suspect, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun, Delta State.

Reports indicate that Ogidi had been apprehended while attempting to send a package containing a Beretta pistol loaded with four rounds of ammunition before the incident escalated.

In a statement released by the state Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, it was confirmed that the officer has been moved to the Force Headquarters, where he will face the Force Disciplinary Committee for possible sanctions and prosecution.

According to the police, the incident occurred on April 26, 2026, after officers attached to the Effurun Area Command acted on intelligence from the public and moved to arrest the suspect. However, ASP Usman, who led the operation, allegedly breached established rules, including Force Order 237 and standard operational procedures, by opening fire on the suspect.
Following the report of the killing, the Commissioner of Police in Delta State ordered the immediate arrest of the officer, who has since been queried and redeployed to Abuja for further action.
The command reiterated its commitment to professionalism, accountability, and the protection of human rights. The state Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi, strongly condemned the incident, extended condolences to the victim’s family, and assured them that justice would be pursued.
The killing, which has sparked public outrage, was reportedly captured in a video showing the restrained victim pleading for mercy before being shot at close range despite his repeated assurances of cooperation.
