The world comes to a standstill as the Britain Monarch Queen Elizabeth Alexander Mary ( Queen Elizabeth II), dies at age 96 at the Balmoral castle, Scotland.

The Queen who ascended the throne in 1952 witnessed enormous social change both in Britain and also around the world. Becoming the Queen at age 25, she became britain’s longest-reigning monarch, the nation’s figurehead and a towering presence on the world stage for seven decades.
Information coming after news that the queen’s health was deteriorating emerged shortly after midday on Thursday when her doctors said she was under medical supervision, prompting her family to rush to Scotland to be by her side.

The news of her demise stunned not only people in Britain but also received an outpouring of condolences from leaders around the world. In Paris, the mayor announced the lights of the Eiffel Tower would be turned off in honour of her passing; in Brazil, the government declared three days of mourning; and the United Nations General Assembly and the Security Council both stood for a moment of silence. Even Russian President Vladimir Putin, whose country’s relations with Britain have plummeted over the war in Ukraine, extended his condolences, calling it an “irreparable loss”.

Following the historic passing of a world renowned monarch, the crown has be passed on to the Queen’s first child, Prince Charles who has automatically become King Charles III.
